RYA VHF Short Range Radio Operators Course
Successful completion of this course will authorise you to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling on any British Vessel which is fitted with a VHF radio. It is a legal requirement that to use a VHF set you must hold or be under supervision of someone holding a valid VHF licence.
The course is run over one day and will cover the following:

- Radio rules and regulations
- Hands on operation of marine VHF equipment
- The phonetic alphabet
- Basic radio language
- Use of correct channels
- Making calls to other stations
- Sending a distress alert and distress message
- Sending an urgency alert and a safety call
- Making routine alerts and calls
- EPIRBs
- SARTs
Throughout the course each student will be allocated a real VHF DSC radio to practice radio procedures in the classroom environment. Towards the end of the day students will complete a practical assessment and a short written examination (30 minutes). On successful completion of the course we will forward your application form to the RYA.
Course Requirements
Fluency in the phonetic alphabet (click here for a downloadable copy)
A passport sized photograph .
The course runs from 0900 to 1730 and includes tea, coffee and biscuits.
